I was in 8th grade when I lost someone I looked up to so much. I had danced for what felt like my whole life, but my dance teacher in 2008 was different. He, (yes I said he), pushed us harder than anybody I'd ever met. He always made me feel like I could do anything.

Our warm-up song was "I'm Every Woman" By Whitney Houston. And if you don't know the lyrics, all you need to know is that 20 thirteen-year-olds would sing, "I'm every womannnn, it's all in meeee" at the top of our lungs like nobody could tell us otherwise.

One day I came home from school, and just like that, my heart broke in a million pieces. And "this woman" suddenly didn't feel as strong. My dance teacher had a heart attack, and I never went back to the studio again.

My head couldn't wrap around the fact that my favorite teacher would never make me laugh again, I wouldn't hear him yell at me to point my toes again, or hug me when I entered the room after a hard day at school. I would never perform again and see his proud smile watching His girls in the audience.

But at a young age, I had to learn how to hold onto the memories and not the "what if's." Because I knew there wasn't a thought in my head that could somehow change time and bring him back.

Letting Go is hard.

Letting Go of people is harder.

And Letting Go of what you cannot change may be hardest.

So, today I'm going to tell you some biblical promises to cling too when letting go seems too hard to do.

1) Let Go of your feelings.

"But, I have bad anxiety."

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." -1 Peter 5:7

"But, you don't know what happened to me."

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."

- Isaiah 43:18-19

"But, I'm hurting and need justice."

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." - Ephesians 4:31-32

Feelings are NOT facts.

But what is a fact is the faithfulness of God.

Making your emotions your foundation for your actions is like building a sandcastle right next to the shore. And at even given moment, it will be swept up from under you. Because like a wave overtaking your castle, the enemy is just waiting to knock you out and pull you into a pit of lies just as deep as the ocean floor.

Stop letting your feelings drive your actions.

And start letting Jesus take the wheel! ( Que Carrie Underwood somebody)

2) Let Go of what happened.

"Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” - Luke 9:62

What God has in store for you isn't in your past.

My dog has a lot of allergies, and she gets something called a "hot spot," which means she scratches an area until its raw—leaving us to have to put the cone of shame on her so she won't touch it. Why? Because the more she touches it, the longer it will take to heal.

As silly as this sounds, this is what we do as humans.

Continually running back to what once was and wondering why we can't move forward.

Stop picking at your past wounds. Let them heal and move on.

"Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward." – C.S. Lewis.

3) Let Go of how you think it should have been

Gods plan will always trump your plans—every time.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,

declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" - Isaiah 55:8-12

And here is the good news, He desires more for you than you could ever even desire for yourself.

If your plans didn't work out

If you didn't get that job

If you messed up, failed a test, didn't get the result you thought

Let it go!! ( yes, I know Queen Elsa said it first)

Stop letting what "should have been" keep you from where you're going.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

-Jeremiah 29:11

4) Let Go of why you think you can't let it go

Being hurt by people is hard

Rejection is hard

Losing those we love is hard

Forgiving is hard

But God knows this.

It doesn't surprise him.

In Matthew chapter 14, The disciples see Jesus walking on water. And in disbelief, Peter cries out to Jesus, "Lord, if it is You, "command me to come to You on the water." (28)

Jesus replies "come" (29)

But then something happens...

"Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" - Matthew 14: 29-30

Sometimes, we want Jesus to show up, move mountains, heal us, and answer our prayers. Only to look the other direction and question everything we asked of Him.

Not because we don't want it, but because we can't let go of our own insecurities to trust God to still do wonders.

I think at that moment, it wasn't just about if Peter thought it was really Him, and more about if Peter would allow himself to look at Jesus and trust that He was capable of doing the impossible. And in order to do that, Peter needed to let go of what he thought was for who IS.

Sometimes letting go is just about what you believe about yourself.

But even in your doubts, God will still show up.

"Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter."

- Matthew 14: 31

Even when you can't seem to let go, Jesus will still be reaching out His hand.

Like a Groom, waiting for His bride to walk down the aisle.

Jesus is waiting for you to say I do.

For better or worst.

He wants to choose you forever.

So, let go of trying to figure it all out.

Today, Jesus is saying, "come"...

"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:30

Take my hand... trust me... And Let go!
