3 things you need to know in order to Surrender to God

"Surrendering is not asking God if he can do what he's asked of you, but if you can do what he is asking."

What does it mean to surrender?

I remember growing up and playing with all my cousins in the pool every summer. We had this game where we would get on this massive float and try to knock each other off. I'll never forget (the one time) I was the last man standing up against my cousin, who was obviously stronger than me, and just looking at her face already feeling defeated. Instead of trying, I yelled, " I surrender" and jumped off the float. Giving her the victory I knew she would have had anyway.

As silly as that is, I think most people think of the word surrender in this way. Giving up and allowing the other person to have the victory.

But surrendering to God is not giving up your victory. Surrendering to God is choosing victory.

To surrender isn't about your external life but our will to choose him over anything else.

So, how do we exactly surrender our lives?

1) Choose God over anything else.

God will never force you to submit your will.

He will wait until you yield to Him.

Surrender is a choice.

He never asks us to do something He hasn't done.

Which is why Jesus is the epitome of surrender. He showed us what it's like to choose Gods will over His own.

"While Jesus was here on earth, He offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue Him from death. And God heard His prayers because of His deep reverence for God. Even though Jesus was God's Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered. In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him."

- Hebrews 5: 7-9

And if you want to genuinely walkout in the plans and purpose He has for your life.

You have to release control.

Luke 22:42 - "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

2) Trust that He is good

To choose Him is to trust that He is better than anything else.

How do you trust someone?

You have to build a relationship with them.

I remember the first day we brought my dog, Annie home. I looked at her little black button nose and curly red hair and thought it was love at first sight. But Annie was in an unfamiliar place. Night after night, she cried. But the more we spent time with her, the more she realized she was safe and could trust us, eventually, she stopped crying. She went from sleeping in her kennel to taking over my bed.

It takes time to trust somebody.

Annie didn't show us affection until she realized she was home.

Don't stop seeking more of God.

The more you find Him, the more you will surrender.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3: 5-6

Jesus has already paid the price. He has adopted you into His family by His blood shed for you. He wants you to stop crying over the things you don't know and allow Him to show you what it's like when you realize you're at home in His presence.

3) Know the cost of surrendering

"You are not your own; you were bought at a price." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

If you're going to choose Him, and trust His will, then you have to be willing to submit to His plans whatever the cost.

Surrendering is not asking God if He can do what he's asked of you, but if you can do what He is asking.

Hebrews 5 said, "Even though Jesus was God's Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered. In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest"

Sometimes surrendering your will means having to let go of things that can seem painful. But if it's the very thing preventing you from seeing more of God, isn't it worth it?

To fully surrender, you have to choose to lay your life down at His feet and allow Him to have access to every part of your heart.

"In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have, cannot be my disciples. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out." - Luke 14: 33-35

So if God tells us to walk away from somebody or something, are you willing to submit to His will and know that He is working all things out together for His good.

Are you willing to let go and trust His will?

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish." - Luke 14: 28-30

So, ask yourself...

Do I have enough trust in God to complete the foundation and start the work He has planned out before me?

Asking Jesus in your heart is the first step of surrender, but allowing yourself to estimate the cost, and plan for the relationship will always give you a better picture of what you're trying to build.

Imagine trying to solve a puzzle without a picture. It will take you longer to put the pieces together if you don't first know what it is you're making.

So, choose to follow Him, trust that He will say what He says He will do, and know what it means to take up your cross and follow Him.

I know to some that may sound too demanding or too much work and I can tell you that yes, it is work. Because like every relationship, you never stop learning about each other and finding new ways to love one another deeper.

God is no exception.

Just like when you love somebody, you want to do things to make them happy, right?

In the same way, you will desire to serve God in full surrender.

"I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart."

- Psalm 40:8

Surrendering won't be a place holding you back from things.

It will be the place you find freedom.

Because when you give Him all of you, He will start to show you all of Him.

"Come near to God and He will come near to you" - James 4:8

He will never stop chasing after your heart.

So just stop running, come home to Him and simply ... Surrender.

I'm praying for you, I'm believing for a breakthrough!

All of heaven is for you.
